Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed invited residents of the restive Tigray province to nominate a new leader, in a bid to ease mounting tensions in the northern region that threaten to reignite a civil war.

The proposed change of leadership is an attempt to end a dispute between rival factions within Tigray’s ruling party, after a splinter group demanded the resignation of interim Tigray President Getachew Reda.
