English schools should involve parents when children are considering changing their gender identity, and do not have to recognize students’ requests to change their name, pronoun or clothing to reflect this identity, according to new government guidance.
The guidance is not compulsory and applies to schools and colleges, the Department for Education said in a statement Tuesday. It was published in response to “a significant increase” in the number of children questioning their gender identity, the department said.
