With all the chaos at Elon Musk-owned Twitter Inc., it’s easy to forget that the mercurial billionaire took over only at the end of October. This year we’ll see what really becomes of the company under his leadership. And though there are more important issues than the future of one unprofitable social media platform, its fate is top of mind for the celebrities and media figures that spend an unhealthy amount of time on the site. There are also implications for everyone else, who will have to live in a reality shaped by the obsessions of the Twitterverse, whether they know it or not.

For now the company is in bad shape. It’s shed key advertisers and more than half of its employees. Since taking over, Musk has said both that the service is thriving and that it could go broke. What happens next is anyone’s guess.
