Venezuela’s jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez ended a partial hunger strike after claiming his protest had forced the government to fix a date for congressional elections.

“A change in Venezuela now has a date,” Lopez said in a handwritten letter read out by his wife, Lilian Tintori, to reporters Tuesday. “I’m asking you with my heart in my hand that we humbly assume the achievements of this protest and together lift the hunger strike.”
