On Nov. 7 the White House said it would almost double the number of U.S. military advisers, trainers, and support personnel in Iraq, from 1,600 to as many as 3,100, to help the country’s security forces take on Islamic State, the Sunni extremist group. On Nov. 10, President Obama sent a request to Congress for an additional $5.6 billion in 2015 to pay for U.S. operations and missions in the region.
