Fat Times for Salmon Farmers

Salmon is one of the most expensive fish you can buy, and it shows every sign of getting pricier. That was the conclusion reached by the biggest operators of salmon farms, who met in mid-October in Puerto Montt, Chile, to discuss industry problems and share strategies to battle outbreaks of disease in the offshore pens that contain the fish. Norway, Chile, and Canada are the major players in salmon farming; the U.S. is a minor one, with farms in Washington State and Maine, and imports most of the farmed salmon it consumes.
