Signs of economic recovery clash with bad omens

Volatility returned to markets with a vengeance in the past month following more than two years of relative calm. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index fell more than 7 percent, and the Dow Jones industrial average lost more than 1,100 points from Sept. 18 through Oct. 15 before gaining about half of it back in a three-day rebound. Concerns about economies overseas, speculation surrounding central bank policies, and Ebola all played a role in the whiplash.
